a day in m's life

(This was a cover letter I wrote in the form of a short story! I had to tell them about a day in my life and wanted it to be based in a spOoky sci-fi world)

The city is buzzing right outside her window as she looks out searching for sister moon, begging her to send some seeds of inspiration to fulfil what is almost a longing for a story that has never existed, one that just never might be told...

The sky was home to a semi-gloomy pastel medley of the colours of sunrise that day. In a small apartment flat all the way east in the heart of Shoreditch, M woke up to the soft touches of the first sun rays caressing her cheeks accompanied by her alarm clock radio starting to play. “Good morning Londoners, the time is 7.08 am on February 28th 2050. Here is a song from Madonna’s 47th studio album to help wake you up.” Her cat, Dorothy, Dot for short, seized this opportunity and jumped up on the bed for some snuggles. Dorothy preferred listening to Lizzo. But she also knew that when M was called on a mission, it was hard to get this chance. Yet it was okay, she liked having a mum with superpowers. Over 50 years ago, a top secret mission involving AI robots had failed due to a technical error, leading the robots to turn evil and plant a brain virus into the brains of the humankind, slowly overtaking the creative parts of their thinking. This meant that ordinary humans could no longer express thoughts the most dear to their hearts but instead were starting to become emotionless clones. A few remaining storytellers had to embark upon daily missions to help solve this. M was one of these few, working hard day and night to tell the stories of those who had lost their ability to. She thrived on helping others share their emotions and visions and it gave her a sense of accomplishment like nothing ever had. She also thrived on doing yoga daily, but that’s another story.

After snuggling Dot for a while, she got out of bed to turn the coffee machine on. The year might have been 2050, but she still needed her daily cup of coffee to get the creative juices flowing. She turned the television on to see how the world was coping that day. She watched various channels from around the world, mostly in English, Turkish and French, noting down important information that could help her that day. She then got dressed while watching Avatar: The Last Airbender on Netflix. She knew she was no longer a child sat on her parents couch eating ice cream while watching Nickelodeon, but it was her guilty pleasure. Seeing Avatar Aang conquer all obstacles that came in his way inspired M to be a better storyteller. In a way, just like Aang, M was still in training to be better at what she loved doing. Although her training was not bending elements but going to university for her Masters degree, it was pretty much the same thing.

After having her morning bagel- always the same, cream cheese and smoked salmon, M was ready to face the day and tell stories. She lived to tell stories.

She slowly yet surely opened the door to take a big step towards the busy streets of London, into the colourful ambiguity of the future. Although she didn’t know what was to come, she was excited for every minute of it because now, finally,

it was time for her to tell her own story.
